The math behind each method

Suppose you have three debts: a $500 medical bill at 0% interest, a $3,000 credit card at 22% APR, and a $8,000 personal loan at 10% APR. You have $400/month available for debt payments after minimums.

With the snowball, you attack the $500 medical bill first. You pay it off in roughly 2 months, then redirect that payment to the credit card, then the personal loan. With the avalanche, you attack the 22% credit card first, then the personal loan, then the medical bill. The avalanche saves more in total interest — in this example, potentially $300–$600 — but takes longer to eliminate the first debt.

Studies in behavioral economics suggest many people underestimate the motivation factor. Debts are not just math problems — they carry stress. For some, eliminating accounts quickly provides enough psychological relief to stay committed for the years it takes to pay off larger debts. Neither method is universally better; the right choice depends on your personality and what keeps you on track.

Hybrid approaches

Some people use a hybrid: start with the snowball to eliminate 1–2 small accounts and build momentum, then switch to the avalanche for the remaining higher-balance, higher-interest debts. There is no rule requiring you to commit to one method for the entire journey.
